    2005 HUMMER H2 SUT - REVIEW

    By Lori Wildrick

The new HUMMER H2 SUT is a lot like Texas—big, bold and unforgettable—but with a wee bit less space. Built for the enthusiast who wants the brawn of an SUV and the cargo conveniences of a truck, the H2 SUT (get it? SUT) conveniently morphs into whatever you want it to be pretty much at the touch of a button. You’ll see a lot of marketing photos of this beast trimmed with a couple of mountain bikes on top, which will give you a good sense of what it is—the ideal vehicle for outdoorsy folks who want to climb rocks and mountains with or without their rock-climbing or mountain biking gear.

To create this morph-mobile, the engineers over at GM basically took a HUMMER H2 and chopped off part of the rear, creating an open cargo bed. In this configuration, the bed offers up a somewhat underwhelming 22 cubic feet of cargo space, which is not exactly let’s-go-away-for-a-week-and-camp storage. But wait, it gets better. The H2 SUT comes with a handy power window folding mid-gate system (borrowed from the Cadillac Escalade EXT). Simply power down the window, fold down the mid-gate and fold the rear seats forward to create a trailer bed that extends up to seven feet. So, if you have the ability to trade off passenger space for cargo space, you’re in good shape to load up all of your gear.

You might need some of that extra space to haul fuel if you’re planning on going anywhere extremely remote. That’s because the H2 SUT is powered by the same 6.0-liter Vortec 6000 V8 powerplant that is in the HUMMER H2. Sure, it makes 316 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and offers 360 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,000 rpm, but it’s a real heavy-weight (6,400 pounds to be specific). And yes, the weight can be an added benefit, but it also results in this "monster" truck getting less than 10 miles to the gallon. Perhaps best to leave the long, uncharted distances to a more fuel-efficient transport.

The biggest difference between the H2 SUT and the HUMMER H2 is the cargo bed and mid-gate, because both vehicles’ dimensions are exactly the same. The height, width, length and wheelbase are identical. Ground clearance, too, is the same—a respectable 10-inches—which provides outstanding approach, departure and breakout angles. If you should find yourself in a sudden desert downpour, no worries, because like the HUMMER H2, the H2 SUT can ford 20 inches of standing water.

The H2 SUT features the same three-piece fully welded ladder-type undercarriage as the HUMMER H2, complete with an aluminum front skid plate and full tubular steel rocker panel protection. Traction control is handled by a brake-controlled, single-wheel control capability with rear axle electronic locking differential. Four wheel disc, four-wheel/four-channel ABS brakes put the "stop" in the brake pedal. And, like the HUMMER H2, the H2 SUT features the same 4L65-E four-speed automatic transmission and Borg-Warner™ two-speed electronically controlled full-time 4WD.

As this is very much an off-road vehicle, it comes with the same awesome suspension package that you find in the HUMMER H2: independent suspension with torsion bars, 46 mm monotube gas-charged shocks and a 30 mm stabilizer bar in front and a five-link variable-rate coil spring Traction Control System with brake-controlled, single wheel control capability, 46 mm monotube gas-charged shocks and a 30 mm stabilizer bar in the rear. A self-leveling rear air spring suspension with an on-board air compressor is available as an option.

The H2 SUT’s interior is similar to the HUMMER H2 as well, with its big, aircraft-style shifter and large dials and gauges. This version offers seating for five (the rear seat is a 60/40 split bench), with standard Medium Wheat leather seats. The heated front seats are eight-way power adjustable, and the driver’s seat has a standard memory feature for two drivers. Rear heated seats are optional. You also can upgrade to an Ebony leather package, which comes with a faux aluminum interior trim to match the H2 SUT’s chrome accents.

The H2 SUT is all about luxury, too, from its leather-wrapped steering wheel with secondary audio controls to the dual zone heating, ventilation and A/C units with rear controls to the nine-speaker BOSE® music system and triple-sealed doors to enhance your listening pleasure. Should you get lost in the music, or just plain lost, there’s the OnStar® package with a one-year Safe and Sound Service Plan. A PASSLock® antitheft vehicle security system ensures that your H2 SUT stays just where you left it.

Options, and of course there are options, include a nice, large sunroof; touch-screen navigation radio; in-dash six CD changer; brush grille guard; roof basket; off-road lamps; chrome appearance package; hard cargo carrier; tubular tail lamp guards, tubular assist steps; removable "U" steps and a trailering convenience package.

The HUMMER H2 has become a wildly popular vehicle, as evidenced by the sheer numbers found on (and off) the highways. The increased flexibility of the H2 SUT puts even more "wild" in "wildly popular" and is likely to be an equally big hit. Which is exactly what you would expect from a vehicle that’s a lot like Texas (only a wee bit smaller). Look for the new H2 SUT to hit dealer lots in late spring/early summer.
